Robert Winslow's 80th Birthday Fundraiser
Celebrate Robert Winslow's 80th Birthday by Giving Back!
To mark my 80th birthday on May 14th and to give back to the community I love, I am launching a fundraiser for two organizations close to my heart: La Plata County Humane Society and the San Juan Mountains Association
My challenge?
Hiking the Sky Steps (all 529 of them) eight times—one round for each decade of my life!
I invite you to support these incredible charities by pledging funds based on my hike. You can contribute in one of two ways:
Per round: Donate an amount per round (e.g., $1 per round = $8).
Per step: Donate an amount per step (e.g., $0.01 per step = $42.32 total).
About the Organizations:
La Plata County Humane Society: Provides shelter, care, and protection for pets in need. Their mission includes animal protection, pet adoption, and efforts to prevent pet overpopulation.
San Juan Mountains Association (SJMA): Empowers locals and visitors to explore, learn about, and protect the spectacular public lands of Southwest Colorado. Their work includes conservation, stewardship, and youth education programs.
About Robert:
For those who don’t know me, I’ve lived in La Plata County for 44 years and have a lifelong passion for the outdoors—hiking, photography, birding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. My journey has included:
- Becoming the 36th person to ever thru-hike the Appalachian Trail (1971).
- Teaching wilderness studies, outdoor education, and nature photography at Idaho State University.
- Leading photography tours to destinations like Africa, the Galápagos, Polar Bears, Yellowstone, and beyond.
- Section hiking the Colorado Trail at age 77 (2021-2022).
